Urban Exploration, often abbreviated as Urbex, is the exploration of man-made structures, usually abandoned or off-limits locations, in urban environments. This activity involves visiting sites such as derelict buildings, factories, tunnels, and other architectural relics often hidden from public view. Urban explorers aim to document these sites through photography or writing, highlighting their historical significance and aesthetic appeal. The practice is typically characterized by a respect for the locations, often adhering to the mindset of “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” Urban exploration can also involve a level of risk, as many sites may be unsafe or legally restricted. Explorers often share their experiences and findings through various media, contributing to a subculture that values the exploration of forgotten urban spaces.
